THE COLLECTION

07/10/2017

- 10/06/2018

Lommel and glass are inextricably linked. Almost 25 years ago, the Lommel city council took up an ambitious challenge: it started its own collection of glass art. In 2010, the exhibition ‘Lommel Municipal Glass Art Collection’ took place in the GlazenHuis. This exhibition presented an overview of the highlights from the municipal glass art collection in the period 1996-2009. Seven years and many acquisitions later, it was time for a sequel: The Collection.

Lommel’s love of glass art originated in the history of the region’s unique quartz sand mining. After all, quartz sand is the basic raw material from which glass is made. With the exhibition ‘The Collection’, the GlazenHuis and the City of Lommel proudly showed – through the work of 29 artists from 12 countries worldwide – the expansion of their collection of contemporary glass. The diverse mix of art objects included various techniques, styles and movements in glass art. The works on display were acquired through acquisitions – under the advice of the Municipal Art Committee – and generous donations from artists and collectors, and were also the result of the many ‘artist-in-residence’ programmes in which international glass artists have been guests at the GlazenHuis in recent years thanks to the support of the Charlotte van der Seijs Foundation. During these annual working periods, international glass talents are given the opportunity to create new work in the Lommel hotshop and thus work on their artistic development. The often surprising and original results of these residency programmes are crossovers between craftsmanship and art and had also found their place in the exhibition ‘The Collection’. By showing this collection of contemporary art, Lommel succeeded in attracting attention as a glass city par excellence and its visitors got the opportunity to admire a unique collection of works of art, many of which have never been shown before.
