KOEN VANDERSTUKKEN (BE)

01/07/2008

- 27/07/2008

Koen Vanderstukken is an artist, professor and author with more than 35 years of experience. In his work, Koen forever searches for the intrinsic differences between personal perception and reality, continuously investigating the duality between reality and appearances. As a result, Koen’s work does not want to give any answers. It is unpretentious and inspires to question the appearance or reality of rationality and emotions. It makes us stop and brings to our attention the ever growing complexity of our human existence, but even more so, the enormous depth and richness that is hidden within it.

Koen is a renowned sculptor and educator. His work has been exhibited in major centres around the world, from Amsterdam, Paris, Prague and Venice to New York, Chicago and Montreal. He ran his own studio in Niel, Belgium from 1990 to 2006 and his glass can be found in many museum and private collections, as well as significant public commissions. Koen has offered workshops and master classes in Europe and North America, in addition to teaching for ten years at the State Institute of Art and Crafts in Mechelen, Belgium.

Since 2006, Koen Vanderstukken is a Professor and the studio head of the glass department at Sheridan College in Oakville, Canada. The Glass Studio at Sheridan has an international reputation for producing artists of outstanding creativity, design sense and technical skill. Furthermore, Koen Vanderstukken is the author of the book ‘GLASS Virtual Real’, published by London based Black Dog Publishing. He also works as series consultant and helped building North America’s biggest hot shop for the Netflix series ‘Blown Away’.

“Only when you consider glass as the material component of an immateriality, you will be able to overcome the functionality and the mystery of the material in a fundamental way.” – Koen
