For more than a century, high-quality quartz sand has been extracted from the Lommel soil, the raw material for many industrial and artistic applications. In a beautiful creation story, this Lommel sand is transformed into glass by extreme heat.
With the Glass House, the City of Lommel wants to provide a platform for glass as a raw material for art. Both for showing and for creating, but also for teaching glass, art and technology by national and international artists. Already in 1990, Lommel appointed an Urban Advisory Committee for Art Policy. This must provide expert advice on purchasing art.
Since 1995, the art committee has focused on ‘Glass art’ or ‘Glass as an artistic medium in applied and free art’. In 2009, the urban glass collection contains more than 50 works.
