ANNOUNCEMENT ARTISTS IN RESIDENCE

We received 23 open call submissions scattered around the world: Australia, Canada, Cyprus, Finland, France, Germany, Austria, Romania, United States, … After careful selection, 2 solo artists were chosen for the 2 residency periods in 2023.

KWUN LAN WONG _HONG KONG

May 15 – July 14, 2023

Hong Kong glass blower Kwun Lan Wong found the molten material while finishing her Bachelor’s in Visual Arts at Hong Kong Baptist University. After graduation, Wong worked as a studio assistant at the university with a variety of responsibilities, including assisting the teaching. She is in her second year of graduate school at Southern Illinois University, majoring in glass. Wong is active in developing her hot sculpting skills in glass studios worldwide. She has traveled to take workshops at the Corning Museum of Glass, Urban Glass, and Pilchuck Glass School in the United States. In 2021, she was in the assistantship program at the Chrysler Museum of Art Glass Studio for six months. Wong finished her first artist residency at Pittsburgh Glass Center in 2022.

The Lo Ting series will be Wong’s main focus during the residency. These works show the struggle for her nationality and identity. In the meantime, they also present her ability in figure sculpting.

“Narration is always a huge part of my practice. I am into creating a poetic atmosphere with the object I make, no matter what size I am working on. I can make large-scale installations when I have extra hands in the hotshop. Children’s books inspire my figurative works by simplifying complex emotions in narrative form.” – Kwun Lan Wong

RINOI IMADA _JAPAN

August 2 – October 8, 2023

Rinoi Imada from Tokyo is an interdisciplinary artist whose ideas are inspired by glass, utilizing glass as a material and thinking tools to create her works. Drawn from a curiosity in the rich subtlety of human experience, her practice takes in various sculptural relationships with glass and glass related processes to explore languages that are easily dismissed, ignored and unseen through our lifetime. Imada earned her Master of Fine Arts degree in Glass from Rochester Institute of Technology in 2021 and is continuing her career as a visual artist and a glass blower. She has received awards and residency opportunities from CSUSB, RIT, and Penland School of Craft in North Carolina in addition to others.
